'Black Sails' Duo Signs Overall Deal at Disney's Fox 21 TV Studios
Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz have inked a three-year pact, joining a deep creative roster at Disney TV Studios.
Disney Television Studios continues to deepen its creative roster.
The latest additions are Black Sails co-creator Jon Steinberg and producing partner Dan Shotz, who was also an executive producer on the Starz series. The duo have signed a three-year overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios.
Steinberg and Shotz most recently worked together as EPs of See, an Apple TV series starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard that's due to be part of the tech company's streaming platform.
"Jon is both an incredibly talented creator and a force of nature as a showrunner," said Fox 21 TV Studios president Bert Salke. "He’s one of the best multi-takers we’ve ever worked with. Together with his producing partner Dan Shotz, we have every belief that he’ll be a major supplier to the Disney platforms and a big presence as a showrunner on our shows."
Said Steinberg, "We couldn’t be more grateful for the faith Peter [Rice], Dana [Walden], Craig [Hunegs] and Bert have shown us, and excited about the prospects for what we'll build together at Fox 21. With so much changing in television, strong studio partners are critical — creatively, economically and personally — and we can't imagine any team we’d rather be a part of than this one."
The deal for Steinberg and Shotz is the 12th for Fox 21 and sister studio 20th Century Fox TV since they came under the Disney umbrella as part of the company's $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets. They join the likes of This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman — who signed a huge new pact — Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, New Girl and Single Parents creator Liz Meriwether, Octavia Spencer, Drew Goddard and others.
Disney TV Studios, which also includes ABC Studios, will have 38 broadcast series on the air next season. That includes 14 new shows, the most among the major studios.
Steinberg and Shotz are repped by WME and Sloane Offer.
